01 · The climb

Built to grip.

Every toe ends in an adhesive pad lined with microscopic channels. A thin film of mucus turns wet leaves and sheer bark into a vertical road.

Toe pads
Hexagonal cells wick water away so the pad keeps contact, even upside down.
Colour
Leaf-green back for camouflage; bright flanks flash to startle predators.
Night shift
Most species hunt after dark and sleep pressed flat against leaves by day.
02 · Hidden in plain sight

The green that watches back.

Green pit vipers coil motionless among the leaves for days, reading the heat of passing prey through pits between eye and nostril.

0.003°C

Heat vision

Facial pits sense temperature shifts this small, painting prey in infrared.

3 days

Ambush patience

They can hold a single strike position for days without moving.

< 1 s

Strike speed

Faster than a blink: the whole strike and return is over in a fraction of a second.

03 · Gravity, negotiated

Snakes that fly.

The paradise tree snake launches from high branches, flattens its body into a wing and undulates through the air to glide between trees.
